Development Associate


CCI seeks a Development Associate who will work closely with the Head of Development to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a pipeline of individual, foundation and corporate donors throughout the year. The successful candidate will excel at proposal writing and coordinating the proposal submission process, ensuring all proposals meet CCI standards. The Charter Cities Institute is a small team so the Development Associate will need to be comfortable contributing to a wide variety of activities. This position reports directly to the Head of Development.

It is preferred that this person has a strong network in the foundation community that supports international development projects, and a creative, thoughtful, and entrepreneurial approach to developing research projects, facilitating relationships, and bringing people together around big ideas.


- Developing, Soliciting, and Securing New Grants (60%)

The Development Associate will be the primary fundraiser for private foundations, corporate and governmental grants. This individual will be responsible for identification, prospective grant research, cultivation, submission, grant fulfillment, and monitoring and reporting for all grant funding. They will focus specifically on increasing the median size of foundation commitments, securing grants in the range of $25,000 to $1 million per year.

- Management (20%)

He/She will be responsible for putting policies and procedures in place to assure high-quality - and ultimately successful - proposals are submitted. He/She should set a standard of excellence for proposals and other written materials (e.g., grants, budgets, presentations). She/he will utilize CCI's CRM system to ensure data is captured and leveraged.

Relationship Building (10%)

He/She will be charged with expanding and deepening CCI relationships with private foundations and corporate giving. He/she will be expected to develop and leverage existing networks to facilitate contacts between CCI leadership and foundation leaders. He/she will also be expected to have familiarity with new trends and priorities within the philanthropic community and to share this information regularly at CCI.

Administrative (10%)

He/She will proactively manage and maintain the calendar and contacts of the Director of Development: arrange internal and external appointments and anticipate the Director of Development’s needs for information and materials. He/She will also ensure that Director of Development sees and reads all necessary materials to prepare for meetings.

He/She will schedule and coordinate travel arrangements for the fundraising team, including developing itineraries, transportation, lodging and assembling travel packets. Prepare travel expense forms and reimbursements.

Prepare meeting agendas, documents, and other necessary materials.

Support Director of Development and fundraising team by applying knowledge to match donor interests with CCI's work.


Required Experience and Education

- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., international studies, development, nonprofit administration, etc.).

- 3+ years of grants and/or contract administration experience in a nonprofit organization or foundation.

- Excellent writing, editing, research, and storytelling skills with a demonstrated ability to synthesize large amounts of information into succinct communications.

- Documented success in securing grants from funders.

- Ability to develop budgets, prepare financial reports and understand financial statements.

- Existing relationships with foundations that can be quickly tapped into to gauge interest in charter cities.

- Strong computer literacy using online donor databases and other sources to locate biographical, financial, and philanthropic information.


Preferred Experience and Education

- Advanced degree in a relevant field.

- Experience as a Development Associate at international development grant making organization.
