Great.com: Rich New Cities: How Can We Build Africa's First Singapore?
Setting up new cities for a prosperous future
Emil Ekvardt from Great.com interviewed the Charter Cities Institute as part of their 'Great.com Talks With...' podcast. This series is an antidote to negative news stories that aims to shed light on organizations and experts whose work is making a positive impact on the world.
Some of the world's richest city states - Singapore, Dubai and Hong Kong - are also among the youngest. Dr. Mark Lutter discussed how we can tackle poverty in the Global South by building brand new urban spaces.
What Are Charter Cities?
Unlike traditional cities, charter cities have a high degree of local autonomy. They rely on strong governance and local laws that promote business registration and job creation. Mark explained that there is huge demand for new cities in the developing world, where the population is becoming increasingly urban. Charter Cities Institute provides information and technical expertise to help meet this demand more effectively.
