The Legal Researcher will work with the Executive Director and the Research team to develop a legal framework for charter cities. Their responsibilities will include helping to develop best practices for administrative law, tax administration, labor law, and more, for charter cities as well as working with charter city developers to implement those recommendations. The Charter Cities Institute is a small team so the Legal Researcher will need to be comfortable contributing to a wide variety of activities.

Responsibilities of Legal Researcher

  • Work with researchers internally and externally on charter cities handbook, developing best practices for various aspects of charter cities, including but not limited to, administrative law, tax administration, labor law, environmental law, and corruption standards
  • Draft memorandums of understanding and contracts for various stakeholders including governments, multi-national institutions, and new city developers
  • Help translate best practices drafted from our research team into legalese
  • Review constitutions and laws from host countries to determine the possibility for charter cities reforms
  • Coordinate with new city developers and governments to determine and implement the best practices to improve governance


  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in economics, political science, or development
  • Law degree


  • 2+ years work experience preferred
  • Familiarity with development economics
  • Strong writing ability
  • Strong communication skills
  • Intellectual curiosity and a willingness to learn
  • Entrepreneurial ability and interest in figuring out new challenges
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Passion for charter cities

The Charter Cities Institute greatly values our office culture. Our staff is intellectually curious and enjoys exploring a wide variety of topics, not all of which are directly related to charter cities. We're a small team, so we frequently go out to lunch as a group, and get drinks together a handful of times per month (though this is not required). Candidates should feel comfortable brining their whole selves to work.
